I was the moderator for the first online interview ever given by soon-to-be web entrepreneur Thomas Dolby. I had met him a month or so earlier while at the Cleveland Music Conference, where he had given a keynote speech. After spending a good deal of time on the phone explaining to Thomas and his manager what the hell I was asking them to do, I was able to convince them to take part in this online discussion by convincing CompuServe to give him a free account to their then leading online service. Back then, an hour of time on Compu$erve could run upwards of $12.00 per hour for a slow connection on a 2400 baud modem.
Thomas Dolby had never heard of the CompuServe service, and had a very peripheral understanding of the Internet. He was doing a little bit of music again at the time, having just released a pretty good CD called Astronauts and Heretics, which is what he was promoting most in those days. In fact, Thomas could barely even use a computer at the time, and did not know how to type. The entire interview was typed by his manager, and both Thomas and she were on the speakerphone with me. During the last half hour of the interview, Thomas actually ducked out without telling me or anyone else and the rest of the interview was done online with his manager Mary posing as him. Tsk, task, Thomas. That was pretty naughty running out on us like that!
Being my first ever task as an online Moderator, the "host" for the evening was Midi Music Forum Sysop Jim Maki. The role of the Moderator was more that off a talk radio show producer, feeding the callers into the host and guest to make the interview happen behind the scenes. It was a role I filled in a few of these early online interviews for many reasons, not the least of which was very protective and odd situation with Jim Maki and Donna Black at Compu$erve, who viewed my "quasi-futurist" views of using their online service for these kind of "consumer events" with some degree of original skepticism.
It was Jim who asked me the amazing question, when I first approached Compu$erve about creating online services for the recording industry, what Compu$erve had to do with the record business, since it had traditionally been used for hardware and software support for computer users. It didn't take him long to convince Compu$erve I was a "loose cannon" and then readily embrace and even take credit, as well as my share of financial compensation, for these ideas.
Sadly, having spent hundreds of hours preparing the industry's first 30-second downloadable music files for record labels (8bit, 11k mono!) using a Soundblaster, a cable from Radio Shack and a boombox, along with scanning hundreds of promo photos, CD covers, typing in artist bio and discography data, soliciting new record label partners, lining up artists for interviews and more, Jim and Compu$erve saw fit to never pay me a single, solitary dime. Their Karma came around though, when Mozilla came out and the whole high-dollar Compu$erve Compu$cam days were rapidly ending. It's a long story that maybe I will tell in full some day, but until then I'll stand by these words under oath if ever challenged. Anyway, enough bitter bitching about getting screwed in the early pioneering days of online entertainment producing, here's the first ever Thomas Dolby online interview!
On December 6th, 1993, The Music Vendor Forum of CompuServe was proud to host a live interview with recording artist Thomas Dolby.
We hope you enjoy the following transcript of that online event!

(#9,T. Dolby) Hello out there, is any body there?
(#15,Jim Maki) Good evening everyone!
(#15,Jim Maki) Thanks for making the conference ...
(#15,Jim Maki) our special guest this evening is Thomas Dolby
(#15,Jim Maki) Tom, would you like to make an opening statement?
(#9,T. Dolby) Well no, not really. It's a great pleasure to be back
in your beautiful country.
(#15,Jim Maki) OK, welcome back here and we'll take some questions
from the
(#15,Jim Maki) members here ...
% Moderator recognizes question #1
Debbie (36)
(#36,Debbie) Hey, there! I have a big ol' question...
(#36,Debbie) How did you get recognized/signed/discovered???
(#36,Debbie) ga
(#36,Debbie) did that go through?
(#9,T. Dolby) I was working as a freelance keyboard player
(#9,T. Dolby) and I made a tape of some of my own songs. I did the
usual rounds of the record co.'s, and in the end someone was foolish
enuf to sign me
/(#36,Debbie) any suggestions for a musician like me?
% Moderator recognizes question #3
William W. Powell (46)
(#9,T. Dolby) exactly what kind of musician are you?
(#9,T. Dolby) ga
(#46,William W. Powell) Saw you here in Atlanta on the "Flat Earth"
tour in '84. Have you considered marketing digitally (ie on the Inter
net). The technology
(#46,William W. Powell) is almost there
(#46,William W. Powell) ga
(#9,T. Dolby) great idea. Only problem is, are there enough subscribers to
help me make my rent?
(#9,T. Dolby) ga
(#46,William W. Powell) Charge ... like pay-per-view
(#46,William W. Powell) ga
(#9,T. Dolby) wanna represent me?
(#9,T. Dolby) ga
(#46,William W. Powell) Sure ... Jim Im done
(#46,William W. Powell) ga
(#15,Jim Maki) Ok William

Rod H (1)
(#1,Rod H) ok
(#15,Jim Maki) Rod, you're on
(#1,Rod H) In A & H you credit Bill&Mathew with keeping you Plugged into the
"source" What do you mean by that?
(#1,Rod H) ga
(#9,T. Dolby) It's a keyboard that Moog used to make...
(#9,T. Dolby) no actually I meant the source of , well, inspiration really.
(#9,T. Dolby) ga
(#1,Rod H) :-)

Warren (4)
(#15,Jim Maki) Go ahead with your question, Warren.
(#4,Warren) Hey, Thomas. Or is it Tom?!? Tell us about the Gugenheim Exhibit.
(#4,Warren) ga
(#9,T. Dolby) It's Thomas. I co-wrote a Virtual Reality program with Eric
Gullickson that was shown at The Guggenheim. It's called "Virtual String
Quartet
(#9,T. Dolby) The idea is, you put on a Head-Mounted diesplay and you're in
the middle of a string quartet.
(#9,T. Dolby) You can tickle the musicians, whereupon they stop playing
Mozart and start to play Appalachian bluegrass or jazz.

% Moderator recognizes question #6
Carlton (41)
(#15,Jim Maki) Go ahead Carlton
(#41,Carlton) Hello Thomas! Is there anyone using the C or C++ programming lang
uages with
(#41,Carlton) Midi. I'm a hack programmer looking to get into a Midi
programming situation
(#41,Carlton) and was wondering if any of the current laguages are used with
Midi to make
(#41,Carlton) music.
(#9,T. Dolby) Deep!
(#9,T. Dolby) I believe some music stuff is written in C and C++, but the
most interesting language (or authoring toolkit) is MAX by Opcode.
% Moderator recognizes question #7
adam (29)
(#9,T. Dolby) It's an interactive environment... lots of interesting stuff.
(#9,T. Dolby) ga
(#15,Jim Maki) Go ahead Adam
(#29,adam) Hello Mr. Dolby! Do you think that the global village concept has
finally arrived? and what will it's impact be in your opinion to
(#29,adam) third world countries?? Will it foster greater understanding??
(#9,T. Dolby) Whoa there Adam. I can barely type and you want me to solve
the world's problems.
(#9,T. Dolby) I love the concept that the militARY
(#9,T. Dolby) invented the net to de-centralise power in case of an attack,
and in so doing created the the first true anarchy in history of
(#9,T. Dolby) civilization.

Brian Kapitan (20)
(#15,Jim Maki) Go ahead Brian
(#20,Brian Kapitan) thomas....anything happening on the "full band" concept
e.g. Aliens ate?
(#20,Brian Kapitan) are you planning anything like that?
(#20,Brian Kapitan) (and say hi to mike for me)
(#20,Brian Kapitan) ga
(#9,T. Dolby) Well this leads me to ask the quetion, are you any relation
to my keyboard player Mike Kapitan?
(#9,T. Dolby) ga
(#20,Brian Kapitan) his brother......we met in chicago a few years back
(#9,T. Dolby) Splendid!ga
(#20,Brian Kapitan) the aliens tour....i think the band thing was your best
work to date
(#20,Brian Kapitan) was it easier or harder to work that way?
(#9,T. Dolby) gee thanks. I love to play live but it's a very expensive and
draining experience.
(#9,T. Dolby) I'll do some more touring again one day but I have to find a
cheAper way!

#9,T. Dolby) but more RAM to me.
(#9,T. Dolby) ga
(#19,jim singer) sotech question... can you do multiple time sigs with
vision. seems like you do
(#19,jim singer) gA
(#9,T. Dolby) yes. The problem with the Mac though is that it's a 10-yr-old
interface (Vision, Digidesign etc) and not a very intuitive musical tool
(#9,T. Dolby) I want a new interface! I lie in bed at night and think music.
I get in to the studio in hte AM and I want to just plug in. Instead
(#9,T. Dolby) I have to follow the Macs way of thinking. Very annoying.

Alexander Oss (45)
(#15,Jim Maki) Alexander, your turn.
(#45,Alexander Oss) 'Lo Thomas! The first piece of recorded music I ever
bought was
(#45,Alexander Oss) Blinded by Science on cassette. I'm a New Wave fan born
n bred...
(#45,Alexander Oss) it strikes me that your music has become somewhat less
playful
(#45,Alexander Oss) since then... is that because of the changing nature of
(#45,Alexander Oss) music (compare today's techno/industrial to technopop
of '84)
(#45,Alexander Oss) or are you taking a more serious view of sound and music
these days?
(#45,Alexander Oss) ga
(#9,T. Dolby) What, What, you mean "Aliens ate my Buick" wasn't playful?
(#9,T. Dolby) I tend to alternate... one playful album, one more serious.
(#9,T. Dolby) ga

(#22,Will) computing. Have you ever considered the possibility that you
(#22,Will) might be able to use your talents to create a universal language
(#22,Will) of sorts (i.e. a completely new kind of interface)?
(#22,Will) ga
(#9,T. Dolby) Yes, that has come to mind. TD saves humanity from boredom and
mediocrity! The first thing is I want my MAC to do stuff that roughly

do you invision
(#26,Brian Kapitan) besides the present "track" based one since i'm a
software engineer by day
(#26,Brian Kapitan) and musician by nite......
(#26,Brian Kapitan) ga
(#9,T. Dolby) 100100 years from now I'll be able to just plug in and out
will come the music I'm thinking... for now we can visualise it using 3-d
(#9,T. Dolby) graphics, VR and other goodies.
(#9,T. Dolby) ga
(#26,Brian Kapitan) anything besides that far?
(#26,Brian Kapitan) do you think computer will write decent music ever?
(#26,Brian Kapitan) ga
(#9,T. Dolby) Fuzzy logic. Why have 1,001 different features on a sequencer
if I only ever use 12? It would be better to harness the computer's
(#9,T. Dolby) power to learn a little more about the user each session.

(#4,Warren) And how was it?

(#9,T. Dolby) 'The Conversation' willbe based on the Coppolla movie, but
20 years later. You will act as the lead characters assistant and roughly
(#9,T. Dolby) try and help him decifer an audio 'conversation' such as the
one in the
(#9,T. Dolby) '70's movie. However, this will be filmed and will be
interactive. It will be audio based. and regarding "Sampling", I'm all for
it,( #9,T. Dolby) I think the days of blindly ripping off James Brown are
gone, record companies don't let you put anything out without getting it
"Cleared"

SB (48)
(#48,SB) Any chance of releasing some of your lectures on video?
(#48,SB) ga
(#9,T. Dolby) Good question. I would imagine that someday soon some of
these seminars that I've been doing recently will be broadcast 'live' or
(#9,T. Dolby) available for 'downloading'. However there are no plans at
the moment.
(#9,T. Dolby) thanks for asking SB

(#15,Jim Maki) Go Deb.
(#36,Debbie) hi! first and lest I guess!
(#36,Debbie) when I last was chatting, you asked what kind of musician I am.
To answer
(#36,Debbie) that I think I'll send my resume to your manager (does she have
fax?!).
(#36,Debbie) My question is...
(#36,Debbie) what is the best organization to get one into the biz (or is
it connections
(#36,Debbie) and luck?). I find nowadays it's all connections (how I got
my 2 current jobs). Your opinion?
(#36,Debbie) ga
(#9,T. Dolby) Well, depending on if you want to be a musician or in more of
the biz side. But both take connections and tenacity. Keep at it wherever
(#9,T. Dolby) you are and build up a fan base and trust me , those
(#36,Debbie) do YOU ever see anything sent to your manager?
(#48,SB) haha
